Few of you know how small my patio is. If you knew, this story would be all the funnier to you. Let me try to do some measuring for you. ... Okay, my patio is about 10 feet square of cement. There is grass surrounding all of that, but the cement pad itself is relatively tiny. The other morning, I grabbed a cup of coffee and came out to water my plants before I left for work. I saw about two houses down a little old man working up a sweat, pumping his arms, power walking. But the part of it that made me laugh was that he was power walking in a circle on his little cement pad. I wanted to watch and see how soon it was before he got dizzy and fell over.

Yesterday morning I had a slight attack of rage come over me when I discovered that the Japanese had landed...beetles, that is, on my plants! You can be assured that I swatted those things right off of there as quickly as I could. I salvaged some tea that hadn't been eaten by them yet and made another batch of fresh mint tea. I tell you what, those nasty little boogers don't know when to quit. They are vicious and stupid. When they are flying through the air, it's almost like they can't see because they'll just smack into something (like, sometimes my face!) and think that it's a friendly territory. I have one word to say about them: ugh!

Jewel and Ramona stopped by my house Thursday night. It was so nice to see friends from Iowa again! We went out for supper at 9 o'clock and then stayed up laughing for quite a while once we got back to my place. It is a good thing Ramona is a nurse because we had some issues to discuss...ha!

I got new nail polish that I am particularly excited about because it is h-o-t pink. It's Barbie pink. It goes with the summer trend quite nicely and I love it. I have been sporting it for a few days now. It reminds me of my niece, Kenni, and I think that she would love to have matching nails.

Tonight I bought myself an adorable little patio table with two chairs. It's so tiny, but it's the cutest tiny thing you've ever seen. One of my kind neighbors helped carry it in from my car and then I set it up and went to work making a nice little dinner of salad, grilled chicken with lettuce on toast, and iced tea. For dessert, I had cherries, a lot of truffles, and a glass of wine. All in all, it feels lovely to sit out here and see the fountain shooting up water and the ducks are settling in with their heads awkwardly tucked under their wings...OH, and the little old man two doors down is starting up his circular power walk. Ha, if only I had a video camera for this. Well, kudos to him anyway for being active.

Here I am enjoying my new patio furniture. I'm sorry that you can't see the furniture. I ordered a new camera that should be arriving Monday or Tuesday! Horray! THEN you can see the furniture.

My Barbie pink nails. The color quality is not so hot on this built in computer camera, I'm sorry.

One for free. I miss this man like the whole world...and all the planets too, including Pluto, which is still a planet in my mind because that's what I learned in school.

ducks & tearful sobs

When I moved into my apartment, there was a duck nest back in the corner of my tiny, fenced yard. I let them be on account of the duck wouldn't leave her nest ever and I thought she might attack me if I went near her. One morning, they were gone, the eggs were hatched and they had joined the flock of other ducks and geese on the pond right behind my patio. (make note that there are also a group of about 3 geese who are mad as hornets whenever I try to get in my patio through the fence/gate. They try to guard it and won't let me in--I hate them.)

Moving on. That was my first encounter with ducks on my patio. One morning last week, I opened the screen door to go out and water my flowers and there were two ducks on my patio. As soon as I went out, they skiddaddled off under the fence so when I went back inside to get more water, I, out of habit, left the screen door open just about 2 inches since I was going right back out. I turned around after getting water in the kitchen and saw one duck with it's head through the little slit trying to get into my house!!!!! I was furious. Get away, stupid ducks.

So I went over there and it waddled away under the fence, but I could see both of them just sitting there on the other side of the fence. Every time I would go inside, they'd pop back under and come over and try to get in my
house and then every time I'd go out, they'd run away and hide on the other side of the fence. This went on for about 10 minutes until I was done watering plants.

The little attitude ducks then came over and pooped all over my mat in front of my patio door. I was so mad at them. I locked my patio door with all four locks when I left for work just so that they can't use their beaks to break the glass or figure out some stupid duck-way to get into my house.

^ The mat that the rebellious ducks pooped all over. I'm still annoyed.

On another note, tonight Carla and I rented "The Freedom Writers." I'm just going to go ahead and admit to the whole reading world that I wept like a little child. I have no idea what was wrong with me as I was watching that movie, but I couldn't stop crying. It was so inspiring. I felt the same way about those students that Carla feels about Olympians from foreign countries fighting against all odds just to compete. If you ever want to feel inspired to touch someone's life, watch that movie. It's based on a true story, which obviously makes it so much more of a tear-jerker. Because of what Mrs. G did in that classroom, an entire foundation was set up for classrooms around America.

The other day, I met Jim Tressel. I won't go into details, but it was pretty cool to say the least. Part of the gig of working with an event planning company, I guess.

On Father's Day weekend, Carla and I went to Mark & Megan's house to celebrate Ian's first birthday. Mom, Dad, Jordan, and Payton all drove out for the weekend as well so it was practically a family reunion.

^ A little auntie-loving and probably some wisdom and teaching as well since I am a wealth of all three.

Until next time, out.

memorial weekend, a weekend of memories

I will not post on and on about Kevin.  I have a thing akin to a strong turnoff when people post all the time about their love life, how much they miss him/her, how much they love him/her, etc.  I will not deny that I love Kevin or that I miss him, that is for certain, but I would hope that both would be assumed seeing as we have been seriously dating for a while now and we live 900 miles apart.

I will, however, give a synopsis of our wonderful weekend together.  He flew out to Columbus last Friday evening to visit me for the weekend.  After picking him up from the airport, we went over to Carla's for a bit and then decided to enjoy the heat of the outdoors.  We went to Rita's [Ice Cream] and then took our cones down by a little tiny river/stream that is lined with a boarded bridge/walkway.  It was beautiful.

Saturday we decided to hit up Easton for a while.  Our heaviest purchase was at one of the food stores there where we bought 4 pounds of truffles.  I know, rediculous, but delicious.  Come visit me if you're hungry for some because I definitely have leftovers.

Saturday night Kevin had a surprise date planned for us (the surprise was only for me though).  It has been bugging me for months because he wouldn't give me any clues or hints.  I had no idea what to expect.  Turned out, he had reservations at a Cameron Mitchell restaraunt called M.  Though it was amazing, the biggest surprise was that he had snagged two front-row tickets to Cirque du Soleil Corteo!!  The show was beyond belief on the level of amazing.  I can't even explain how cool it was...  I'm not sure if I was more impressed with the midget attached to balloons flying over the crowd or the acrobats swinging from 40 feet above the stage or the dancer twirling upside down from the chandeliers suspended in the air.

Sunday evening was the premier of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Sisters (starring Carla and me).  To commemorate our time there, we all went out for French food before we went back to Carla's to watch.  Unfortunately, due to some technical difficulties, we didn't make it through the whole 4 hours.

Monday, Kevin and I went to the Franklin Park Conservatory.  Neither of us really knew what it was about before going (besides the obvious), but we had a really good time there!  Everything was so pretty.  After that, we got his stuff together and I had to deposit him back at the airport again.  Hopefully before too long, I'll be able to make an airport withdrawal because those are definitely the best kind of airport transaction.

Besides that, being in Ohio is going good.  I am continually getting lost on the roads, but hopefully I will soon start to become familiar with the area.  My apartment came together much faster than I expected.  It's tiny and cute.  I love hanging out there.  I also have become a bit of a wanna-be flower freak.  I still don't really know anything about my plants, but I try to take good care of them.  The hardest ones are my two big ferns.  They are super temperamental.  I also have a little herb garden in a window box and an aloe plant.  I have a couple others too, but I can't remember what they are called; I just know that they are pretty.  :)  The pool/hot tub at my apartment are open now for the summer so I am hoping to put them to good use.  If anyone wishes to come visit me, we can also work up a sweat on the tennis or sand volleyball courts that I have.  I'll post some pictures because I know those are what always gets people's attention, not that I'm trying to attract any...

Maybe next time I'll add pictures of my apartment and my plants.  I know Mom would appreciate that.

a.i.

It's commercial break so I can post for just a minute. American Idol always brings out the voice in me. I get so inspired. Maybe it's the red carpet tonight. Maybe it's the hustle and bustle, the lights, the cameras... Or maybe it's just the singing. Sometimes I wish...

But then I just go to the piano and sing to myself.
